One kind of principal component analysis is shown to equal the common rearrangement table well known in phytosociological studies. The linkage to classification and the concept of Type is evaluated. The scale of coverage of the two most pronounced phytosociological schools is shown corresponding to common observed distributions in nature. After the methodological section different connections to the more modern theory of species/area relations are discussed, and how to conceptualize and pool island communities of species.
