The intensification of land use processes in all areas of national economy and of social life makes it necessary for all natural conditions of social reproduction to be carefully considered in the socio-economically determined processes of management and planning and to be controlled quite systematically. A detailed characterization of the social functions of landscape is a prerequisite to any attempt in these processes. Depending upon the particular objectives to be achieved, four fields of activity can be distinguished: landscape planning, landscape preservation, landscape control, landscape construction. Landscape diagnosis is founded on a wide spectrum of relations between physical conditions of landscape and their forms of land use. In this connection it is possible to distinguish four groups of special attributes: characterization of the performance capability, the loading and carrying capacities, the utilization suitability, and the availability of landscape elements and landscape units.
