Girdling is a specific activity accomplished by some Picidae resulting in horizontal series of pricks (girdles) in the bark of damaged trees occurring frequently around the whole stem. Pricks disrupt conducting pathways of the stem, penetrating deep into the cambial zone and causing release of photosynthates consumed by woodpeckers.
