The future of the ecosystem influenced by the derivation of a better part of the Danube discharge is dependent on setting priorities in the area. There are many different interests there including forestry, power production, fishery, recreation, nature conservation. Water manipulation and ecosystem management must respect the natural patch dynamics in the area. The present technical solution does not preserve the ecological connectivity of the river and its side waterbodies. It is necessary either to narrow the riverbed and/or to shallow it, so that the river can communicate with its side branches also at low discharges. The restoration of ecological quality cannot only be accomplished by hydrological manipulation. It also needs accompanying activities and regimentation of land use. Ecological designs for forestry are mentioned and the consecutive steps for restoration of ecological and ecosozological values are suggested.
