Vegetation research based on plot sampling (so-called relevés) has a long tradition here in Slovakia. Phytosociological studies resulted in local and regional overviews of vegetation types, based on the classification of the sampled relevés. An increased emphasis is put on connecting a geographic and botanical methods for mapping of the vegetation and flora recently. This makes the comparing of the data obtained in time and space easier. This work describes an online tool for searching vegetation (phytosociological) points in the area of Slovakia. The uniform grid of the mapping scheme was generated by combining GIS (Geographic Information System) with scripts written in PHP, XML Ajax, JavaScript with MySQL database. This grid was based on units of 10’ longitude × 6’ latitude. The Mapping Scheme for the Flora of Central Europe forms the basis for the preparation of a few distributional atlases. Work on the mapping scheme was started in 1964 in most Central European countries with the help of numerous voluntary collaborators, many local working groups, and several regional centers. This online tool can be considered a definitive product, ready to be employed in the scientific and educational research, e.g. monitoring of vegetation change, and assessing the resources of vegetation at the landscape level. Traditional botanical approaches need to adapt to the challenge for greater precision and spatial objectivity within a GIS environment. Modern geotechnologies bring a huge methodological impetus.
