This paper presents a summary of results from literature research on the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) methodology used in analysis of air-borne dust in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Application of INAA in the Ostrava locality in the Czech Republic determined 32 elements present in airborne dust. The degree of reliability in determining these elements is defined herein; with results plotted in Figure 1 and 2 graphs. The highest concentration in percentage order of magnitude was established for Fe + Mn, and while these were dominant in 80 % of samples, the presence of Zn, Sc, Cr and Sb was also noted. Toxic Sb and As elements were identified in 10–4 – 10–3 % order of magnitude in all Ostrava samples, and this range has generally remained unchanged throughout the years. In addition, Na, K, Ti, Cr, Zn, Zr and Ba concentrations ranged from 10–2 – 10–1 %. Our Czech Republic research also highlighted that the concentrations of nine elements in Hostýn Hills airborne dust were one to two orders of magnitude lower than those recorded for Ostrava, while Sb, Se and, Rb concentrations were approximately the same and other elements including As were absent. Radionuclides with decay half-lives in the order of magnitude of minutes were not determined because this was outside the scope of the present paper.
