Landscape damages of the mining activities in the North-West Bohemia were studied and restoration strategies are suggested. The basic hypothesis is used, that landscape is a stabile living system with optimal flow of matter and energy. Colonization of landscape disturbs these natural functions moderately, but opencast mining in some places completely eliminates these functions. It is possible to restore landscape functions, but permanent presence and activity of man is supposed. We defined function of landscape like a flow of solar energy, flow (cycle) of water and matters. These flows are inseparably connected. Man-made interventions and activities should be in harmony with landscape functions. From our basic study follows effectiveness of individual initial vegetation of new landscape and its importance for restoration of short water cycle. Interesting result represents relative rapid stabilization of function of the grasslands including increase of species diversity.
