Study has proven correlation between the structure and organisation of urban space and crime: with new criminological theory supporting this correlation. The European Union Justice and Home Affairs Council has highlighted that crime prevention through design is a successful and effective strategy for crime prevention and that this needs to be supported. Despite this, new projects continue to be implemented throughout Europe without considering safety criteria; thus creating urban areas where crime and fear of crime make life difficult.
